Big day out

The big day out is an initiative of Awaba Public School. The aim of this program is to offer life experiences to our students and transfer these experiences into rich writing activities. Mrs Swanson and Mrs Maher take small groups of students, in either year groups or interest groups, on 1/2 day excursions to places of interest. The students do a preliminary lesson to plan and discuss, and a follow up lesson in which a writing task is completed.

In 2014, the big day out was a huge success. We visited places such as Wangi Wangi Fire Station, Hillsborough Dog Show, Yamuloong Aboriginal Bush Tucker Centre, The Newcastle Tram and we even went behind the scenes at a Movie Theatre. We wrote postcards, created brochures, information reports and even filmed a documentary.
